Ashleigh's Birth Story - Navigating Pre-eclampsia, Caesarean birth & NICU

Ashleigh shares her story of navigating the twists & turns of pregnancy & birth, facing challenges & making informed decisions to keep her & her baby safe.

Our birth story didn’t quite go as we planned, but I don’t think things often go as you want.

We did hypnobirthing with Emily and it helped so very much with our discussions and decision making.

Around 31w my blood pressure was high, when it came to a growth scan at 33w we found out she was small as well as me having a high blood pressure. It pointed towards pre-eclampsia. Meaning we’d need a little more monitoring and checks to ensure she was still keeping along the growth charts.

Another specialist scan of my placenta at 35w turned out she had actually stopped growing around 33/34w and there was a back flow in the blood flow. Everything went much quicker from this point.

I stayed in hospital from then on and was offered induction, I declined and went for C-section. I knew I didn’t want to risk being in labour for days knowing it could be stressful for her especially as she was very small.

Adeline was born by C-section at 36weeks at a tiny 3lb11oz. I got to feel her for a minute or so before she was whisked off to NICU as she hadn’t managed to keep her temperature and needed to be in an incubator. Her daddy followed her to NICU and sat by her whilst I was stitched up.

An hour or so later I was wheeled down to see our little girl and just sat and stared at her.

I was in hospital recovering for 8 days, and she spent 15 days in NICU.

Nothing can prepare you for NICU, Nothing can prepare you for going home without your baby and knowing someone else was looking after her.

She was finally allowed home when she hit 4lb and has absolutely thrived since then.

Our little angel Adeline is worth it a million times over ❤
